Travel Days Wednesday Jan 09 to Sun Jan 13, 2019
Another year going out to Dillon Colorado. We left Wednesday
, Jan 09, at 7am under sunny skies and temps in the mid 30s. As we got half way
thru Pennsylvania
, the clouds quickly came upon us with a light snow falling. The temps also
dropped into the high 20s. As we traveled into Ohio ,
the snow picked up in intensity and as we arrived in Columbus , Ohio
we were glad we were at our destination. This day we traveled 535 miles. We
stayed at a Drury Inn and Suites hotel because included in the nightly charge
is a happy hour that allows you 3 free
drinks and a buffet and a morning breakfast made to order.
On Thursday, we started our travels around 8:30am under
cloudy conditions. But as we entered Indiana ,
the sun came out and we had clear sailing thru Illinois
and to Columbia , Missouri . However, the weather warnings
started for ice and snow conditions along I70 starting Friday morning. On Friday, we left 7:30am to get a head start
on the weather warnings. But as we got to the Missouri
– Kansas
border, it started to rain. I kept a close eye on the temperature which was 36
degree. As we arrived at Hays Kansas, the temp had dropped to 33 degrees and we
decided to stay at the Confort Suites in Hays instead of traveling to Coby , Kansas .
Good thing we did because about 30 minutes later, the snow started and made for
bad travel conditions.
As we woke up on Saturday morning, it was a winter
wonderland outside. Hays had about 6 inches of snow overnight and because the
temp remained around 32, the roadways were slick and icy. We delayed getting on
the roadway until 10:30 when the conditions on I 70 started to improve. The
first 100 miles, Hays Kansas to Coby Kansas ,
was very slow going. Almost 3 hours to
travel that distance. But as we got closer to the Colorado
border, about 50 miles from Coby, the roadway improved and we were able to
increase our speed to 60 miles an hour and once in Colorado , it again became clear sailing.
Speed in Colorado
was 75 MPH. And after a total of 1855
miles we arrived at our condo around 5pm. It was certainly a LONG day.
It was a beautiful Sunday morning. After church we went food
shopping. And after unpacking the food, sat down to watch the Football
playoffs. In the evening we went to the Arapahoe Café for burgers and watched
the final game, Philly vs New Orleans .
I think we will ready to go skiing on Monday.
Hey George, where did you say that hotel was with the free three drinks and breakfast?
